What Is TMS Treatment?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

For many people living with depression, feelings of hopelessness and despair dominate nearly every aspect of daily life. This can take a significant toll on interpersonal relationships, professional lives, and a person’s overall wellness. Depression impacts a person’s decisions, thought processes, and interactions. While many people manage to lift the heavy fog of depression through lifestyle changes, coping mechanisms, psychotherapy or medications, others still struggle to find peace of mind.

If you are suffering from large-scale depression and have found traditional treatment methods to be ineffective, Oasis TMS may be able to help.

What Is TMS Treatment?

At Oasis TMS , our mission is offering an environment conducive to providing results-orientated relief from depression and other mood disorders.

While antidepressants alter your brain chemically, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy uses magnetic fields to stimulate underactive nerve cells in the brain. At Oasis TMS, we use a top-of-the-line, FDA-approved device to direct magnetic energy pulses to the brain’s prefrontal cortex. As a result, transcranial magnetic stimulation can painlessly revitalize areas of the brain responsible for mood control while improving communication within the central nervous system.

TMS trials have shown to produce lasting, positive effects on brain function in people who have otherwise experienced a form of treatment-resistant depression.

TMS Treatment Helps a Range of Conditions:

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy is an FDA-approved therapy proven effective in adults suffering from a variety of common conditions including:

  • Anxiety disorders such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Treatment-resistant depression
  • Help Treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

There is research underway to see whether TMS therapy can work effectively on the following disorders, but they have not yet been cleared by the FDA:

  • Stroke rehabilitation
  • Schizophrenia
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Chronic pain
  • Nicotine addiction
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder

Benefits of TMS Therapy

  • Reduction in the emotional effects of depression
  • Greater control of anxiety symptoms
  • Non-systemic delivery, meaning nothing enters the bloodstream
  • No sedation – patient remains awake and alert during treatment
  • Non-invasive – nothing is inserted or implanted into the body
  • No drugs – unlike with some drugs, there are no side effects like weight gain, drowsiness, sleeplessness, stomach upset or sexual problems you may experience with medication.

Potential Side Effects of TMS

TMS Therapy has very few risks and side effects associated with the procedure. There has been no reported evidence suggesting that TMS therapy has any effect on a person’s long or short-term memory. The most common side effects we see with TMS Therapy are headaches or migraines and some potential scalp irritation or discomfort. This can commonly occur  both during or after treatment. TMS side effects are mild and generally improve with each session performed as our patients becomes more comfortable with the TMS treatment. There is potential for TMS Therapy to cause a seizure, but this is extremely rare. The Oasis TMS Team is here to discuss risk factors and any concerns you might have with you in advance.
